March 5 - Link: Japan: It's Not Funny Anymore

"The biggest electronics stores actually keep ladders on hand so that certain employees can climb the ladders and scream indecipherable words down at the customers, through megaphones.

I do not use the word 'indecipherable' lightly. Some stores actually demand that employees enlisted as barkers absolutely refrain from using actual words."

March 5 - Link: Online game seeks to empower Africa

"Players earn points and power-ups by completing real-world tasks like volunteering, making business contacts or researching an issue, then submitting evidence of their work online.

At the end of the game, McGonigal expects some players to have business plans about how they will improve the world."

February 26 - Link: Shall Ape be Allowed to Kill Ape?

"The participants in the ‘Great Ape Project’ argue that non-human ‘great apes’ should share the human right to life, the human right to the protection of individual liberty and the human right not be tortured. [...] It is well known that chimpanzees have a propensity to kill one another; so it seems that society as a whole ought to take action to prevent chimpanzees from violating one another’s rights to life by policing chimpanzee communities."

February 25 - Link: Cigarette smokers have lower IQs than non-smokers

The researchers adjusted for socioeconomic status, the fact that people with mental and behavioral problems are more likely to smoke, and for the possibility that nicotine withdrawal symptoms during IQ tests might cause lower scores, but even then, it turned out that the lower your IQ, the more you smoke.

"The researchers looked at 20,211 18-year-old men recruited into the Israeli military. IQ steadily dropped as the number of cigarettes smoked increased, from 98 for people who smoked one to five cigarettes daily to 90 for those who smoked more than a pack a day. They also compared IQs for 70 pairs of brothers in the group in which one brother smoked and the other did not. Again, average IQs for the non-smoking sibling were higher than for the smokers."
